Secretariat of Synod sends message for Vatican II anniversary
By Christopher Wells
In a Message for the 60th anniversary of the opening of Vatican II, the General Secretariat for the Synod notes that the Synod itself is a 鈥渇ruit鈥 of the Council, 鈥渁nd indeed one of its 鈥榤ost precious legacies鈥欌 (quoting 杏MAP导航 Francis).
The recalls that the Synod鈥檚 purpose is 鈥渢o prolong, in the life and mission of the Church, the spirit of the Second Vatican Council鈥 and 鈥渢o foster in the People of God the living appropriation of its teaching.鈥
The ongoing synodal process, dedicated to 鈥淪ynodality in the life and mission of the Church,鈥 likewise follows from the Council, and is rooted in Vatican II鈥檚 theology of the people of God. Although the term synodality does not appear in the conciliar documents, the concept appears throughout the Council, while the three terms 鈥渃ommunion, participation, and mission... are eminently conciliar words.鈥
Finally, the Message emphasized the significance of synodality for the Church going forward, recalling that both Benedict XVI and 杏MAP导航 Francis have described synodality as a 鈥渃onstitutive dimension鈥 of the Church, with 杏MAP导航 Francis proclaiming that the path of synodality 鈥渋s the path that God expects from the Church of the Third Millenium.鈥
