杏MAP导航 at Jubilee Audience: the life of Jesus is the treasure
By Christopher Wells
杏MAP导航 Leo resumed the special Saturday Jubilee Audiences this morning, focusing on Jesus鈥 saying, 鈥淭he kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field.鈥
began with a reflection on the 鈥渟pecial charm鈥 children feel in digging in the earth, 鈥渂reaking the hard crust of the world to see what lies beneath.鈥
This, the 杏MAP导航 said, 鈥渋s how the Kingdom of God is found. Hope is rekindled when we dig and break through the crust of reality, when we go beneath the surface.鈥
St Helena, a 'woman who seeks'
He reminded the faithful of the early Christians who, as soon as they were able to freely profess their faith, began to dig into their history, 鈥渆specially in the places of Jesus鈥 Passion, Death, and Resurrection.鈥
He pointed to the example of St Helena, the mother of the first Christian emperor, who, according to a universal tradition, sponsored excavations in the Holy Land. St Helena, he said, is remembered as 鈥渁 woman who seeks, a woman who digs.鈥 And he noted, 鈥淭he treasure that ignites hope is in fact the life of Jesus,鈥 saying, 鈥渨e must set out in search of His traces.鈥
Helena鈥檚 quest, the 杏MAP导航 suggested, might be explained by the crosses she bore in her own life, beginning with her humble origins. Throughout her life, Helena experienced sorrows and disappointments, but remained 鈥渁 woman searching.鈥 鈥淪he had decided to become a Christian,鈥 the 杏MAP导航 said, 鈥渁nd always practiced charity, never forgetting the humble people from whom she herself had come.鈥
杏MAP导航 Leo highlighted her 鈥渄ignity and faithfulness,鈥 qualities that 鈥渟till change the world today: they bring us closer to the treasure, like the work of a farmer.鈥
Finding the Kingdom of God
He emphasized that the work of 鈥渃ultivating one鈥檚 own heart requires effort鈥 but by digging, one finds; by lowering oneself one draws ever closer to that Lord Who stripped Himself to become like us.鈥
Recalling again the discovery of the relics of the Passion through the excavations of St Helena, the 杏MAP导航 said Jesus鈥 Cross 鈥渓ies beneath the crust of our earth.鈥
It is always possible, 杏MAP导航 Leo concluded, 鈥渢o trample heedlessly upon the treasure beneath our feet.鈥 But, he said, 鈥渋f we become like children, we will come to know another kingdom, another strength. God is always below us, to raise us up on high.鈥
