杏MAP导航: A pilgrimage needs silence, the Gospel, and Matthew 25
By Kielce Gussie
Welcoming Italian pilgrims from the Camino de Santiago, 杏MAP导航 Francis commented that the 鈥渘umber of pilgrims to Santiago has grown in the past thirty years.鈥 He recognized that two well-known pilgrims were his predecessors: 杏MAP导航s John Paul II and Benedict XVI.
In 1982, the Polish 杏MAP导航 became the first pontiff to travel to the Apostle James鈥 tomb and he returned five years later for World Youth Day. 杏MAP导航 Benedict XVI made a pilgrimage to Santiago in 2010.
Three signs of a pilgrimage
While 杏MAP导航 Francis acknowledged the positive aspect of the increase in pilgrims, he posed the question: 鈥淒o the people who walk the Camino de Santiago truly embark on a pilgrimage? Or is it something else?鈥
He pointed out the three signs that define a Christian pilgrimage to the Tombs of the Apostles. The first is silence. 鈥淲alking in silence allows one to listen, to listen with the heart,鈥 he described, 鈥渁nd to find, as we walk, the answers that the heart seeks.鈥
The second sign is the Gospel or, as the 杏MAP导航 called it, 鈥渁lways have the Gospel in your pocket.鈥 Re-reading the Scriptures is what makes a pilgrimage. A pilgrimage is 鈥渁ll the more true, and all the more Christian鈥 when the pilgrim gives of themselves to others.
For the third sign, 杏MAP导航 Francis coined the term, 鈥淢atthew 25 Protocol.鈥 He explained this is taken from the Gospel passage that reads, 鈥淲hatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.鈥 The 杏MAP导航 stressed the need to pay attention to what others need or those who are struggling.
Prayers for pilgrims
Ending his speech, 杏MAP导航 Francis encouraged the pilgrims in their apostolate of care and evangelization. 鈥淭he ancient pilgrims teach us that from Christian pilgrimages,鈥 he described, 鈥渨e return as apostles!鈥
He placed the Holy Family of Nazareth, "pilgrims in the land of Palestine" as an example for everyone during the Advent season of waiting.
