杏MAP导航: Abuse by men and women in the Church is a 'monstrosity'
By Christopher Wells
杏MAP导航 Francis emphatically repeated the Church鈥檚 commitment to 鈥渮ero tolerance鈥 when it comes to priests who abuse others, in an interview with CNN Portugal broadcast on Monday evening.
鈥淚 want to be very clear about this: Abuse by churchmen and churchwomen 鈥 abuse of authority, abuse of power and sexual abuse 鈥 is a monstrosity, because the churchman or churchwoman, whether priest, religious man or woman, or layman or laywoman, is called to serve and to create unity, to make grow, and abuse always destroys,鈥 the 杏MAP导航 said.
鈥淎buse is a tragic reality of all times, but also of our time,鈥 杏MAP导航 Francis continued, noting that most abuse occurs in the family or in the neighbourhood and is found in sports, clubs, and schools. However, although only a small percentage occurs in the Church, the 杏MAP导航 said that even one case of abuse in the Church is a 鈥渕onstrosity.鈥
In response to abuse, the 杏MAP导航 said it is necessary to recognize the reality of abuse in modern society; to ensure that abuse is other sectors, such as the family is not covered up; and for the Church to address abuse in the areas it is responsible. The Holy Father reiterated the Church鈥檚 commitment to zero tolerance of abuse, saying 鈥渁 priest cannot continue to be a priest if he is an abuser. He can鈥檛.鈥
The 杏MAP导航's interview with CNN Portugal was broadcast on Monday evening, but recorded on 11 August.
World Youth Day
Ahead of World Day 2023, set to take place in Lisbon, Portugal, 杏MAP导航 Francis credited 杏MAP导航 St John Paul II with the inspiration to bring young people together from all over the world, to strengthen them and support them. He said the creativity of young people is 鈥渁 sign they are anchored in the present, looking to the future鈥 it helps them to find themselves and feel strong enough to make their way towards the future.鈥
He insisted that 鈥渢he 杏MAP导航 is going鈥 to World Youth Day 2023: 鈥淓ither Francis is going or John XXIV is going,鈥 he said, alluding to the possibility that there might be another 杏MAP导航 by the time of the event. 鈥淏ut the 杏MAP导航 is going.鈥
杏MAP导航 Francis spoke, too, about the need to speak to young people in their own language, which comes from their own youth culture. 鈥淪o you have to listen to them in their way of interpreting things and respond to them in a way that they can understand鈥 and according to the experiences they are living today.鈥
How does the 杏MAP导航 pray?
Asked about his prayer life, 杏MAP导航 Francis said he prays the Liturgy of the Hours every day, and also prays the Rosary and meditates on the Bible. 鈥淚n other words,鈥 he said, he prays in different ways. 鈥淚 place myself before God and sometimes I get distracted, but He doesn鈥檛 get distracted, and that consoles me,鈥 he said, adding 鈥渆verybody has to pray as the Holy Spirit inspires them.鈥
The 杏MAP导航 then spoke about how one can know that the Holy Spirit is speaking to us. The Holy Spirit speaks all languages, he said, but knows how to bring harmony out of differences. This harmony, the 杏MAP导航 said, is the ecclesial sense 鈥 a sense that is absent from those who have a religious sense, but lack the Holy Spirit.
杏MAP导航 Francis returned to the theme of the harmony produced by the Spirit in response to a question on the ongoing synod. He said the Synod on Synodality has its roots in 杏MAP导航 St Paul VI鈥檚 recognition that the Latin Church 鈥渉ad lost the synodal dimension.鈥 They current synod, 杏MAP导航 Francis explained, is intended 鈥渢o finish the catechesis on synodality.鈥
The Synod, 杏MAP导航 Francis insisted, is not a parliament, where everyone says what they want. Instead, in a synod, all seek the harmony that is produced by the Holy Spirit. So, he said, 鈥渋n the Synod there is diversity in what each one says, but it is the Spirit who creates harmony.鈥
The importance of dialogue
The 杏MAP导航 also insisted on the importance of dialogue, especially in regard to a question about what he would say to the presidents of Russia and Ukraine. The 杏MAP导航 noted that both presidents had visited him in Rome before the current war. 鈥淚 believe that dialogue always leads to progress,鈥 but noted that dialogue is often difficult.
The 杏MAP导航 said he was unsure if he would be able to visit Kyiv or Moscow, noting that he was having health issues with his knee once again after his journey to Canada. Nonetheless, he said he is doing what he can and asking everybody to do what they can. 鈥淭ogether we can do something,鈥 he said, adding that he is accompanying the situation with his pain and with his prayers.鈥
Ahead of WYD: Open the window!
The interview with 杏MAP导航 Francis also covered a number of other topics, including the importance of good liturgy, the role of women in the Church, and his daily routine.
Finally, asked about what message he has for the Church of Portugal ahead of World Youth Day, 杏MAP导航 Francis said, 鈥渓ook at the window. Look at the window. And ask yourself: 'Does my life have an open window?' If it doesn't, open it as soon as possible. Don't be with your nose to the wall, of a problem, of whatever it is. Know that we are walking towards the future, that there is a path. Look at the path鈥pen the window! Look beyond your nose, beyond! Look, open up, keep the horizon, and widen your heart.鈥
