By Vatican News staff reporter

鈥淓ach day, there is a growing 鈥楴O鈥 to the death penalty around the world,鈥 says 杏MAP导航 Francis in the video released on Wednesday announcing his prayer intention for September. 鈥淔or the Church, this is a sign of hope.鈥

In The 杏MAP导航 Video, produced by the , the Holy Father maintains that the death penalty is not necessary 鈥渇rom a legal point of view.鈥

He argues that 鈥渟ociety can effectively repress crime without definitively depriving offenders of the possibility of redeeming themselves.鈥

He adds that there must be 鈥渁 window of hope鈥 in every legal sentence. Capital punishment, he says, 鈥渙ffers no justice to victims, but rather encourages revenge. And it prevents any possibility of undoing a possible miscarriage of justice.鈥

Always possible to repent

杏MAP导航 Francis goes on to say that the death penalty is 鈥渕orally inadmissible鈥 because it destroys life, and insists that 鈥渦p to the very last moment, a person can convert and change.鈥

The 杏MAP导航 argues further that 鈥渋n the light of the Gospel, the death penalty is unacceptable, because the commandment 鈥楾hou shalt not kill鈥 refers to both the innocent and the guilty.鈥

杏MAP导航 Francis concludes his message with an appeal for all people of goodwill to mobilize for the abolition of the death penalty throughout the world.鈥

鈥淟et us pray that the death penalty, which attacks the dignity of the human person, may be legally abolished in every country.鈥
