杏MAP导航 praying for Nicaraguans after destruction of Managua crucifix
By Devin Watkins
The 杏MAP导航 turned his thoughts to the Church in Nicaragua on Sunday, following the recitation of the Angelus prayer.
鈥淚 am thinking about the people of Nicaragua who are suffering due to the attack on the Cathedral of Managua,鈥 he said, 鈥渨here a widely-venerated image of Christ 鈥 which accompanied and sustained the lives of the faithful for several centuries 鈥 was seriously damaged, almost destroyed.鈥
鈥淢y dear Nicaraguan brothers,鈥 he added, 鈥淚 am near to you and I am praying for you.鈥
Petrol bomb attack
On Friday, an unknown attacker entered Managua鈥檚 Cathedral and threw a Molotov cocktail at a 400-year-old crucifix, which went up in flames.
Firemen brought the blaze under control fairly quickly, and there were no injuries.
The Archbishop of Managua, Cardinal Leopoldo José Brenes, called the incident 鈥渁n act of terrorism.鈥
In a statement, the Archdiocese of Managua said the attack was 鈥渄eplorable鈥 and 鈥渙ffends and deeply wounds鈥 all Catholics in Nicaragua.
Papal prayer
杏MAP导航 St. John Paul II visited the Cathedral and prayed before the now-destroyed crucifix in February 1996.
At the time, he urged Nicaraguans not to waver in their faith 鈥渨hen the fatigue, loneliness, or incomprehension of others seeks to diminish your enthusiasm.鈥
鈥淒o not doubt that you are loved by the Lord, and that His love always precedes and accompanies you. His victory serves as a guarantee of ours!鈥 said the Polish 杏MAP导航.
