杏MAP导航 encourages Scholas Occurrentes to help others find meaning in life

In a video message published on Friday, 杏MAP导航 Francis encourages participants of a Scholas Occurrentes online meeting organized on the occasion of World Environment Day.

By Fr. Benedict Mayaki, SJ

World Environment Day is celebrated annually on 5 June. To mark this year鈥檚 festivities, the Pontifical Scholas Occurentes Foundation is holding a global cyber meeting of young people, parents and teachers. As part of the meeting, 杏MAP导航 Francis sent a video message of support and encouragement.

鈥淭oday, after all these years in which we have explored the question that drives us, it is a great joy to be able to call you community: community of friends, community of brothers and sisters,鈥 said the 杏MAP导航.

杏MAP导航 Francis recalled that Scholas began 鈥渁s something unplanned鈥, with two teachers in the midst of a crisis. He added that even though the crisis left behind a land of violence, 鈥渆ducation brought people together, engendering meaning and therefore, generating beauty.鈥

Crisis and beauty

杏MAP导航 Francis said that Scholas鈥檚 journey of reflection and encounter brings three images to mind: 鈥淭he Fool鈥 from Fellini's La Strada; Caravaggio鈥檚 鈥淐all of St. Matthew鈥; and Dostoevsky's 鈥淭he Idiot鈥. These stories, according to the 杏MAP导航, 鈥渁re the story of a crisis鈥, since, in all three, 鈥渉uman responsibility is at stake.鈥

杏MAP导航 Francis explained that a crisis 鈥渂reaks us down to open us up.鈥 That is why crises, without good accompaniment, are dangerous: because a person can become disoriented. He says people should 鈥渘ever go into a crisis alone鈥, even if they seem small or personal.

鈥淚n a crisis, fear invades us. We close ourselves off as individuals鈥e empty ourselves of meaning, hiding our call, losing sight of beauty.鈥 However, said 杏MAP导航 Francis, quoting Dostoyevsky, 鈥渂eauty will save the world.鈥

鈥沦肠丑辞濒补蝉 was born out of crisis,鈥 杏MAP导航 Francis pointed out. But it 鈥渄id not raise its fists to fight against a culture, nor did it lower its arms to resign itself.鈥 Rather, it emerged 鈥渓istening to the hearts of young people.鈥

Education

鈥淓ducation is not just about knowing things,鈥 said the 杏MAP导航. Rather, to educate is 鈥渢o listen, to create culture and to celebrate.鈥 He stressed that if education is unable to listen, create, and celebrate, 鈥渋t cannot educate.鈥

杏MAP导航 Francis went on to say education must harmonize 鈥渢he language of thought with feelings and actions鈥 and speak the language of the head, the heart and the hands.

International community of encounter

The 杏MAP导航 remarked that he saw students and teachers from different countries learning, playing and dancing together at Scholas, and referred to that experience as 鈥渁n olive tree鈥 creating 鈥渁 culture of encounter between the East and the West.鈥

He said the exchange of the dreams of children and young people with the experience of adults is necessary and must take place. Otherwise, 鈥渢here would be no roots, no history, no promise, no growth, and no prophecy.鈥

杏MAP导航 Francis reminded Scholas students that the 鈥渟ame life gave birth to all of us鈥 and it will always generate other worlds. Everyone is therefore a student of all realities, languages and beliefs, and what we learn is not an object, but rather Life.

Words of encouragement

The 杏MAP导航 urged everyone to strive ahead and not to forget these three words: gratitude, meaning and beauty.

He added that, like the founding teachers of Scholas, who did not hold on to what they had but rather gave it away freely, we should keep on sowing and reaping, walking together, and smiling, while taking risks to overcome any crisis.
