By Francesca Merlo
杏MAP导航 Francis began by encouraging members of the Italian Catholic Press to carry their founders鈥 dream, which, according to their Statute, is to be: "a professional and ecclesial association inspired by the service of persons, the Gospel and the Magisterium of the Church".
Good from evil
Journalists, said the 杏MAP导航, are 鈥渃hroniclers of history鈥. He urged those present to 鈥渂e the voice of conscience鈥 of a journalism which distinguishes 鈥済ood from evil鈥 and 鈥渉uman choices from inhumane ones鈥.
鈥淭ell the truth at any cost鈥, said the 杏MAP导航, being always 鈥渞espectful and never arrogant鈥.
World-shaping words
The 杏MAP导航 went on to express the importance of 鈥渞eal words in the midst of so many empty鈥 ones. Because, he said, 鈥測our words narrate and shape the world鈥 Your stories can generate spaces, these can be spaces that promote freedom or slavery; responsibility or dependence on power.
Only through using words of 鈥減eace, justice and solidarity鈥 can a more just and supportive societies be built. Therefore, he continued, 鈥渕ay you contribute to exposing false and destructive words鈥.
Prioritise
The 杏MAP导航 went on to talk about the difficult tasks that journalists face in the digital age. With the web, he said, you must 鈥渋dentify credible sources, contextualise, interpret, and, above all, prioritise鈥.
鈥淒o not be afraid to overturn the order of the news鈥, he said, in order to 鈥渢o give a voice to those who have none鈥.
