杏MAP导航 on climate crisis: Time is running out, decisive action needed
By Lydia O鈥橩ane
Addressing those attending the summit, which included multinational oil companies, the 杏MAP导航 spoke on an issue very close to his heart: .
杏MAP导航 Francis told those gathered that this second year of Dialogue in the Vatican was taking place at a 鈥渃ritical moment.鈥
Today鈥檚 ecological crisis, especially climate change, he said, 鈥渢hreatens the very future of the human family鈥.
The Pontiff noted that a significant development in this past year was the release of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which warns that effects on climate will be catastrophic if the threshold of 1.5ºC outlined in the Paris Agreement goal is crossed. 鈥淭he Report warns, moreover, that only one decade or so remains in order to achieve this confinement of global warming.鈥
Action needed
Faced with a climate emergency, the 杏MAP导航 underlined, 鈥渨e must take action accordingly, in order to avoid perpetrating a brutal act of injustice towards the poor and future generations.鈥
In effect, he went on to say, 鈥渋t is the poor who suffer the worst impacts of the climate crisis.鈥
What was required, stressed 杏MAP导航 Francis, was courage in responding to 鈥渢he increasingly desperate cries of the earth and its poor鈥.
Points of discussion
During his address, the 杏MAP导航 focused on the three points that were being discussed during the meeting, which are, a just transition; carbon pricing; and transparency in reporting climate risk.
杏MAP导航 Francis remarked that a just transition to cleaner energy, which is called for in the Preamble to the Paris Agreement, can if managed well, generate new jobs, reduce inequality and improve the quality of life for those affected by climate change.
On the issue of carbon pricing, the 杏MAP导航 said, this was 鈥渆ssential if humanity is to use the resources of creation wisely.鈥
Speaking on the third point, transparency in reporting climate risk, 杏MAP导航 Francis commented that, 鈥渙pen, transparent, science-based and standardized reporting is in the common interests of all.鈥
Time is running out
In conclusion, the 杏MAP导航 warned that 鈥渢ime is running out!鈥
Deliberations, he emphasized, 鈥渕ust go beyond mere exploration of what can be done, and concentrate on what needs to be done.鈥
In our meeting last year, 杏MAP导航 Francis said, 鈥淚 expressed the concern that 鈥榗ivilization requires energy, but energy use must not destroy civilization鈥. Today a radical energy transition is needed to save our common home.鈥
He continued by saying that, 鈥渢he climate crisis requires 鈥榦ur decisive action, here and now鈥 and the Church is fully committed to playing her part.鈥
However, the 杏MAP导航 did strike a note of optimism, 鈥渢here is still hope and there remains time to avoid the worst impacts of climate change鈥, he said, 鈥減rovided there is prompt and resolute action鈥︹
The summit was organised by the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.
