杏MAP导航 sends condolences for death of Card. Nasrallah Sfeir

杏MAP导航 Francis sends his condolences upon the death of Cardinal Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir, who died on Sunday just ahead of his 99th birthday.

鈥淚 extend my deep condolences to his family, and to all the faithful of the Patriarchal Maronite Church of Antioch, which he governed for many years with such gentleness and determination,鈥 wrote the 杏MAP导航 in a telegram sent Tuesday to Cardinal Rai.

Cardinal Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir served as the Patriarch of Antioch between 1986 and 2011.

He died on Sunday in Beirut, Lebanon, after a long illness. He would have turned 99-years-old on May 15th.

Architect of peace

杏MAP导航 Francis called Cardinal Sfeir 鈥渁 free and courageous man鈥 and 鈥渁 key architect of mediation, peace, and reconciliation鈥.

鈥淎 staunch defender of his country鈥檚 sovereignty and independence, he will remain a great figure in Lebanon鈥檚 history,鈥 said the 杏MAP导航.


Cardinal Sfeir served as the spiritual leader of Maronite Catholics during Lebanon鈥檚 1975-1990 civil war.

鈥淚 ask the Father of all mercy to welcome into his home of peace and light this wise and committed Pastor who knew how to manifest God's love to the people entrusted to him.鈥
