The meeting took place on Saturday evening and lasted about 90 minutes. Participants described the encounter as 鈥渃ordial and polite鈥�.

According to a brief statement released by the Vatican Press Office, the eight survivors who met with 杏MAP导航 Francis were Mrs. Marie Collins, Fr. Patrick McCafferty, Fr. Joe McDonald, Dublin City Councillor Damian O鈥橣arrell, Paul Redmond, Clodagh Malone, Bernadette Fahy, and another survivor who preferred to remain anonymous.

Two of those present at the meeting released a statement immediately afterwards in which they said 杏MAP导航 Francis 鈥渃ondemned corruption and cover up within the Church鈥�, describing it as 鈥渃aca鈥�, a colloquial Spanish term that literally means 鈥渇ilth鈥� or 鈥渆xcrement鈥�.

The two survivors, Clodagh Malone and Paul Redmond, were both infants when they were forcibly separated from their mothers who were staying in Church-run institutions known as 鈥淢other and Baby Homes鈥� at the time. They said they asked the 杏MAP导航 to publicly call for 鈥渞econciliation and reunion for these families鈥�.

In his first address in Ireland on Saturday morning, to political and civil authorities, 杏MAP导航 Francis acknowledged the 鈥済rave scandal caused in Ireland by the abuse of young people by members of the Church鈥�. He went on to recognize the 鈥渇ailure of ecclesial authorities to adequately address these repellent crimes鈥�.

Again on Sunday, during his visit to the Marian Shrine at Knock, the 杏MAP导航 asked forgiveness for the crime of clerical sex abuse. In an apparent reference to his meeting with survivors the previous evening, he said no one could fail to be moved by the stories of those who 鈥渟uffered abuse, were robbed of their innocence, and left scarred by painful memories鈥�.
