杏MAP导航 at Mass: By reaching out we find the promised inheritance

杏MAP导航 Francis contrasts the leaven of the Pharisees with the Holy Spirit鈥檚 leaven which leads Christians to reach out to others in the hope of 鈥渇inding the inheritance鈥 they have been promised.

By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp

During his homily on Friday at Casa Santa Marta, 杏MAP导航 Francis reflected both on the First Reading and on the Gospel of the Day. He contrasted the 鈥渓eaven鈥 of the Pharisees to the leaven of the Holy Spirit which leads to embracing the 鈥渋nheritance鈥 which the Lord left to everyone.

Leaven of hypocrisy

杏MAP导航 Francis described the leaven of the Pharisees as the leaven of hypocrisy which allows self-centeredness to grow. This leaven applies to people who think only of appearances, he said. Should they meet someone in difficulty along their path, they turn their gaze away. 鈥淛esus says that this leaven is dangerous鈥 because it has no future, the 杏MAP导航 said.

Leaven of the Holy Spirit

The other type of leaven, which has the opposite effect, is that of the Holy Spirit. Turning to the First Reading from the Letter to the Ephesians, 杏MAP导航 Francis explained that the leaven of the Spirit is given to those who have been 鈥渟ealed by the Spirit鈥. The Spirit, he said, is the pledge of the inheritance while Christians await 鈥渃omplete redemption鈥. Jesus himself wants Christians to 鈥渏ourney continually with the Holy Spirit鈥檚 leaven鈥 toward the horizon, 杏MAP导航 Francis said. Because Christians possess the pledge of the inheritance, they then reach out toward those in difficulty, the suffering, the fallen, in the hope of 鈥渇inding the inheritance鈥.

Life in the Spirit

With the leaven of the Holy Spirit, Christians are able to face the difficulties encountered on the journey, 鈥渆ven all their sins, but always with hope鈥, 杏MAP导航 Francis said. 鈥淗ypocrites have forgotten what it means to be joyful鈥. And he concluded, 鈥渢here is joy in the hearts of those who possess the leaven of the Holy Spirit, even when they face problems and difficulties鈥.
