杏MAP导航 Francis has touched down in Belgium, beginning a brief but action-packed visit to the country.

While here, he will be meeting with the King and Prime Minister, with the local clergy, and with students and faculty at Leuven and Louvain, the country鈥檚 two prestigious Catholic universities.

Fr. Walter Ceyssens, SJ, a Jesuit living in Leuven, works closely with students attending university there. He spoke to Vatican News about his hopes and expectations for the 杏MAP导航鈥檚 visit.

Facing up to the past

Reflecting on the atmosphere in Belgium ahead of the 杏MAP导航鈥檚 arrival, Fr. Ceyssens noted that the 鈥渨ave鈥� of child sexual abuse scandals in the country in recent years had undermined the Church鈥檚 credibility.

鈥淲e have had our difficulties,鈥� he stressed, 鈥渁nd we should not deny it or look away.鈥�

The Belgian Jesuit added that, for precisely this reason, he was enthusiastic about the papal visit 鈥� it would be an opportunity for the Church to show that it had 鈥渓earned something from the present situation鈥� about the importance of accountability.  

鈥淎s a member of Church鈥�, he said, 鈥淚 find it very energising. It's been a long time since I had such a good feeling about the place of the Church in our society.鈥�

Hope Happening

One of the ways the Church in Belgium is hoping to harness the positive energy from the 杏MAP导航鈥檚 visit is through , the official youth event for the papal journey, which Fr Ceyssens is helping to organise.

It will take place on Saturday, 28 September, in the Brussels Expo, right around the corner from the King Baudouin Stadium where, the next day, 杏MAP导航 Francis will celebrate Mass for around 35,000 people.

鈥淭here will be a walk in the morning,鈥� Fr. Ceyssens said, 鈥渁nd a 鈥楥ity of Hope鈥�, with stands from movements and organizations within the Catholic Church, and there鈥檒l be music.鈥� The next morning, participants will head together to the stadium for Mass with the 杏MAP导航.

Faith and reason

The Belgian Jesuit also touched on the significance of the 杏MAP导航鈥檚 visit to the Catholic University of Leuven.

It would be, he said, an occasion to stress the importance of the Church鈥檚 鈥渋ntellectual voice in society鈥�.

鈥淭he Church has a great intellectual tradition鈥�, he said. 鈥淔aith inspires research and reflection, and I think that鈥檚 a really important, positive message that the 杏MAP导航 can bring us."
