Leaders across Britain react to death of 杏MAP导航 Emeritus Benedict

Church and political leaders across Britain pay tribute to 杏MAP导航 Emeritus Benedict XVI on learning of his passing.

In a message to 杏MAP导航 Francis, King Charles III said he learned of the death of the 杏MAP导航 Emeritus with 鈥渄eep sadness.鈥  The British monarch wrote that he remembered 鈥渨ith fondness鈥 his meeting with 杏MAP导航 Benedict in the Vatican in 2009.  He said the late pope鈥檚 state visit to Britain in 2010 was important in strengthening the relations between the Holy See and the United Kingdom and praised Benedict鈥檚 鈥渃onstant efforts to promote peace and goodwill to all people.鈥


In a tweet, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he was鈥 saddened鈥 to learn of the death of Benedict XVI. He wrote that the late 杏MAP导航 was a great theologian whose 2010 visit to the UK 鈥渨as an historic moment for both Catholics and non-Catholics throughout our country.鈥

The Head of the Anglican Communion, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, whom Benedict met during that same visit to Britain, released a statement saying that he joined with all those mourning the death of the late 杏MAP导航.

In his statement Archbishop Welby described 杏MAP导航 Benedict as one of the greatest theologians of his age and said throughout his life and ministry Benedict strove to direct people to Christ.

In Scotland, the President of the Catholic Bishops鈥 Conference there, Bishop Hugh Gilbert has issued a statement paying tribute to the 杏MAP导航 Emeritus.  Recalling that Benedict鈥檚 memorable visit to the United Kingdom in 2010 began in Scotland, Bishop Gilbert said the late 杏MAP导航鈥檚 鈥済entle and prayerful intelligence revealed during that visit disarmed his critics.鈥 He went on to note that Benedict was 鈥渙ften misunderstood, even caricatured鈥 but contrary to a widespread perception, the late 杏MAP导航 was 鈥渄eeply and critically engaged with modern thought鈥 and 鈥減astorally sensitive.鈥
